Lake Manyara, Serengeti & Ngorongoro Crater (4 days)
This four-day safari offers extensive wildlife viewing opportunities in Tanzania’s celebrated national parks. The tour starts at Lake Manyara National Park, famed for lions that climb trees and over 400 species of birds. Following this, the trip continues to two UNESCO World Heritage sites—the Serengeti National Park, renowned for its endless grasslands, and the Ngorongoro Crater, celebrated for its remarkable wildlife diversity.
Itinerary
Day 1: Moshi – Lake Manyara National Park – Lake Manyara Region
In the morning, your safari guide will collect you from your accommodation in Moshi after breakfast. The drive to Lake Manyara National Park, nestled within the Great Rift Valley, takes approximately three hours. Dominated by Lake Manyara itself, the park hosts extensive colonies of waterbirds. Flamingos, notable for their vivid pink coloration, thrive here alongside pelicans, storks, and cormorants, among the park’s over 400 bird species. The park is equally famous for lions adept at climbing trees, typically observed lounging in the park’s open central areas. During your game drive, sightings of giraffes, buffaloes, hippos, elephants, zebras, and numerous other species are also common. Late in the afternoon, you will exit the park and spend the night at a campsite near the village of Mto wa Mbu.
Meals included: Lunch, Dinner
Day 2: Lake Manyara Region – Serengeti National Park
After breakfast, the drive takes you past Karatu town and through the rich vegetation of the Ngorongoro Highlands, opening onto the expansive southern Serengeti plains. Established in 1951, Serengeti National Park is the oldest in Tanzania and forms part of a larger ecosystem including Kenya’s Maasai Mara Reserve and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. These combined reserves support an annual migration of over 1.4 million wildebeest, nearly 300,000 Thomson’s gazelles, around 200,000 zebras, and thousands of topis. Serengeti hosts approximately three million large mammals, making it the world’s richest national park in terms of wildlife population. Besides the migrating herds, you’ll find giraffes, elephants, buffaloes, hyenas, and crocodiles. Felines also thrive here, with about 3,000 lions, over 300 cheetahs, and approximately 400-700 leopards residing within the park. After an extensive wildlife tour, your overnight stay will be at a campsite located in the Serengeti’s central Seronera region.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 3: Serengeti National Park – Ngorongoro Crater
Your morning begins with further exploration of the Serengeti before midday departure towards Ngorongoro Crater. Without fences separating these two conservation zones, wildlife viewing opportunities remain excellent during the transfer. Your accommodation for the night is Simba Camp, situated on the crater’s edge, providing panoramic views of the crater floor below.
Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner
Day 4: Ngorongoro Crater – Moshi
Early risers can enjoy a stunning sunrise over Ngorongoro Crater, conditions permitting. Post-breakfast, the safari descends approximately 600 meters via adventurous routes into the crater. The Ngorongoro Crater measures between 17 to 21 kilometers across and shelters diverse wildlife representative of the East African savanna ecosystem. Approximately 15,000 to 25,000 animals inhabit this area seasonally, dominated by grazing animals such as wildebeest, zebras, gazelles, and buffaloes, attracting high numbers of predators. The crater boasts Africa’s highest predator density, including over 100 lions organized into multiple prides. Visitors have excellent chances to spot Africa’s “Big Five”—lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo, and rhino—in a brief timeframe. In the afternoon, ascend the crater and return to Moshi.
